Travel, Chicago style

For our midterm project, I was inspired to recreate the travel site, Choose Chicago. I liked that by recreating the site I had the potential to use a variety of different photos and subjects.

I replicated the color scheme from Choose Chicago, which uses a black, white and gray palette.

I also looked at a variety of other tourism sites to get ideas for my layout. I establish order and hierarchy in my current design. The viewer understands that the dominate story on the page is the lead story with the headline, “Van Gogh exhibit at Art Institute.” I established this focal point with the large box and photo. The layout employs order because all of the stories on the page have the same design and all of the items are aligned.

Although the page doesn’t have white space, I was sure not to overwhelm the page with too much information. All of the items have their own distinguishable space.

I took the photos I used for this assignment on a cloudy, rainy day using my iPhone. To lighten up my photos, I edited them in Photoshop. I think this gave the photos a similar hue.
